WHAT YOU CAN LEARN FROM NYFW: MEN'S STYLISTS
The Council of Fashion Designers of America’s first-ever New York Fashion Week: Men’s is officially in full swing and it’s my duty to be your guide for all things grooming. Fashion Week, for the most part, is about the clothes. However, I’m here to remind you that grooming also plays an important role — a designer’s look is never complete on an unkempt man.
For starters, grooming begins with a useful skin regimen. DTRT, a men’s skincare brand known for their bold packaging and effective products, partnered with designer Richard Chai for his SS' 2016 show. I had the opportunity to chat backstage with their grooming expert Vesta Goodarz, as she prepared every model for hair and makeup. She guided me through an easy process on how any guy can achieve healthy skin in just a few easy steps.
First step: exfoliation. This should be done a few times each week after washing your face. Do it in the morning, prior to shaving, to receive the best results. It rids your skin of excess dirt, brings ingrown hairs to the surface for an even shave and reduces acne outbreaks. You'll feel fresh and revived. Afterwards, apply DTRT’s Dear Matt Lotion to your face to remove excess oil and reduce the visibility of pores. It’s a very light serum designed for men with oily skin. It also contains an herbal combination of chamomile, lavender, rosemary, sage and peppermint.
Hydration is the next step to flawless skin. When your skin is flushed with moisture it radiates a healthy glow and an even complexion. Eight glasses of water a day apparently keeps the dry skin away, but DTRT’s Better Tomorrow Cream can get the job done too (but that doesn’t mean you can skimp on the H2O!) Infused with a rich combination of mannitol, betaine, blackberry and black bean, this black jelly-like formula is packed with moisture.
The final step is the application of BB cream, which is an all-in-one serum that gives your face a smooth, flawless finish. They’ve generally been marketed towards women, so there’s a misconception that only women use them. But now, BB creams are available for both genders. Vesta Goddarz goes on to explain “when BB creams came out a few
years ago, for women, it was a revolution. Rather than us using our primer, moisturizer or foundation, it was very good to have all of them in one — along with SPF. It was basically all of them together. I use mine every time. It’s very light and it’s wonderful! And I feel safe knowing that I’ve already got my SPF covered!” For men, this is an interesting point because they want a product that does it all. It’s a one-stop shop. You can purchase DTRT’s Get Ready BB 50+ at Sephora.com.
So, remember: Your skincare regimen should begin by cleansing your face. Next, exfoliate to rid your skin of dirt and dead skin. Then, you should hydrate to replenish the moisture that your skin needs. And, finally, apply BB cream to complete the process. There you have it — effortless skin in under five steps!
